Is your website engineered to build your authority status and provide you with a stream of leads? Listing a physical address on your website clearly shows you’re not hiding something. That you are accessible. If you are like most consultants, your website has vast room for improvement. So without further ado, let me share with you five steps that can turn your website from being an information source to a client generator. Communicate Your Value When a prospective client comes to your website it is critical that the first thing they see is your value proposition. Also called a, your value proposition is a sentence to short paragraph that instantly articulates what you do, who you do it for, and what makes you a better choice than the competition. Here is one website that clearly has thought out their value proposition and beams it right at the visitor the moment they land on the page. Especially as an independent consultant, if you don’t show your face on your website, well, you remain faceless. In the example below, although Aweber is a well known company to some, to others that land on this page for the first timethey might find themselves wondering what the company provides. The stronger your value proposition, the more it will speak to your ideal clients. The greater chance you will have in pulling them deeper into your website to learn more about you and your services. And that increases your chances of landing a new client. Design For the User, Not For Yourself Here’s a shocker. People don’t read, they scan. Okay, maybe that wasn’t such a shocker, yet many websites are still designed with what the website owner thinks looks goodwithout taking into consideration how people actually use websites., recommends that you make your text scannable. That means you should make the most important points (the ones you want the visitor to actually see) stand out. You can achieve this by bolding certain kinds of text, like Michael is one handsome guy. See how that works? Drew your eye to it, right? Another way is to make use of bullets and lists. Create a stunning Business free website, tailored for Consulting & Coaching now. Pick the Consulting & Coaching website template you love. The Consultant. This article includes a compilation of 20 business consulting WordPress themes available for free download. A clean and responsive free WordPress theme with a pro design created for corporate and portfolio websites. The template offers theme options based on Redux Framework. The whole idea here is to break up your text so that it’s easier for the human eye to scan around your site and quickly pick up the most important information. This is another reason that your font size should be large enough that your target market can actually read it. If your clients are 40-60 year olds, don’t use 8 pt font that only 8 year old kids can read! Here’s a great example from: Articulate Your Offerings Because visitors don’t actually read everything on your site when they first arrive, be sure to also clearly list what it is that you actually do and your services clearly. Don’t plunge your service offerings into a pool of paragraphs and text. List your services out so the user can clearly see them. Show Them You Are Real Online commerce continues to grow and will do well into the future. That said, the biggest objection people have online is lack of trust. When someone visits your website, do you provide them enough information to know that you are who you say that you are? Do you have a picture of yourself or your team on your website? If you work from an office with employees, do you show a picture of your office environment? Especially as an independent consultant, if you don’t show your face on your website, well, you remain faceless. And in the consulting world, since your whole goal is to establish a relationship with a prospective client and then build that relationship, showing who you are is key. Most of the time they will either leave the site making a mental note to come back to your site later or possibly (if you’re lucky) add it to their bookmarks. Do you provide enough background on yourself, your accomplishments and background? It’s critical that you build credibility. You can show logos of clients you’ve worked with. Testimonials from your clients, case studies and more to prove the point. Remember, you want to do everything you possibly can to alleviate any hesitation or objection the visitor might have in doing business with you. Two other ways you can effectively deal with this issue is to provide a phone number to your office. Even if you don’t pick it up. Even if it goes to voicemailthe idea that you have a number that people can speak with you on is huge. The second big one here is showing your address. Listing a physical address on your website clearly shows you’re not hiding something. That you are accessible. These may seem like small things but the positive affect they can have is amazingly powerful. Color Matters Derek Halpern of recently created a video talking about the impact of colors on your website. I will include the video for you here, if you’d like to watch it all (it’s a great video). To summarize, this is what Derek shares There are really two kinds of colors that you need to know about. Passive colors – these are the colors that make up your brand identity and image. If the color you use on your business cards and logo is blue, then you’d likely incorporate blue into your website. Action colors – these are colors that tell people that they can take an action. For example, you might use red or orange buttons or links on your website – which clearly tell people they will take an action (go to another page, etc) when they click on them. The big mistake many website owners make is to mix their passive and action colors. That is, if their passive colors (brand identity) is blue, they will also make their links blue. This problem is compounded when you also have a headline or other text on the site that is blue, but that isn’t a link. The result is that the user doesn’t know what they can actually click and what they can’t. So be clear in how you use both of these. Here’s Derek’s video. Build Relationships Let’s look at what happens on many websitesA prospective client visits your website. Maybe they found it through an online search, a paid ad, it doesn’t matter. They arrive on your site, try to figure out what it is that you offer, who you are, and can you help them with their problem. Most of the time they will either leave the site making a mental note to come back to your site later or possibly (if you’re lucky) add it to their bookmarks. This process does little to nothing to start building your relationship with this prospective client. The better and much more effective approach is to capture the visitor’s information. It can simply be their email address, or you can get their name as well. Here’s how it works. Again they come to your site and go through the same process. Except this time, they see that you are offering a free valuable report, audio, or email series on a topic that they are interested in. They enter their email address to get it (you can use a program like to do that). Now, even if they leave your site without contacting you, you can follow up with them over the next few days, weeks, months and even years. This way, you can send them additional valuable information. Offer them a case study, send them a newsletter, or notify them when you’re offering a new service or special offer. This is how you start to build relationships with prospective clients that are visiting your website. There you have it. Five quick tips to help you land more clients through your website and increase your sales. Have you found any other approaches that have worked on your website? Do share them in the comments below. Hi Michael, Thanks for that info! Very helpful! Do you have suggestion as to what kind of logo/art/font to use in order to attract a prospective client? I am of the opinion a website must be simple (uncluttered), with nice art containing the information you mentioned: (what you do (highlighted), full-blown services description, qualifications of the consultant, contact info and feedback, last but not least providing piece of info to establish relationship. I forgot: color and establishing who you are – pictures) Thanks, Zoe •. I’m pleased that I’m right on point with all your tips and already have them in place for the most part. II like that you explained why you recommend this stuff – that is what made me realize that what I’ve done is good stuff because I agree with your points, yet found them insightful and educational. Great marketing too for others on your site. I will be looking into Aweber as that is the only area that I’m significantly lacking in. I know that others do this, because it happens to me when I’m searching for something, I was just oblivious as to how I could do this, also. Very excited about learning more about this. Great job – I usually don’t take the time to comment. It wasn’t too long ago that I saw a friend on Instagram share how she had spray painted some rocks gold and had her kids hunt for them. She said they loved it. I knew my kids would too, and decided I wanted to put together a little Pirate Map Scavenger Hunt for them (thanks for the idea, Cherish!!) ? I spent some time designing a Pirate Map and coming up with general clues I thought everyone would be able to use. I also picked up some gold spray paint along with some rocks from the backyard and gave them a quick little makeover. I knew there were a few different ways to do this but thought it would be fun for them to collect the “gold” as they went to the different spots around the house. It ended with a little treasure box with each of the kids’ favorite candy in it and a few more gold pieces. The whole activity was a huge success. The kids ran from each clue spot so excitedly that the hubby and I couldn’t help but smile as they did it. Although it didn’t last long the kids decided they each wanted their own map and got to color it afterwards. I think we’ll have to do it each summer just long enough time where they would actually have to figure out the clues again. ? If you’re looking for a simple but fun activity for your kids to do and enjoy this summer, then I highly recommend this one. It’s super easy and really fun! Here’s what you’ll need if you want to do it SUPPLIES: – Rocks – Gold Spray Paint – Scrapbook paper (if you want to print the map onto “old looking” paper) – Treats for the End DIRECTIONS: 1. Begin by spray painting your rocks gold and letting them dry. I ended up doing 2 coats. TWO MAP OPTIONS: MAP ALONE: MAP WITH FIRST CLUE ON IT: 2. Print your map. To do that CLICK on the image above and then RIGHT-CLICK and SAVE. Open it in a program like WORD and PRINT. I had some brown, old-looking type scrapbook paper that I cut to 8.5×11″ big that I printed it on. I thought it would look more real. ? After I printed it I kind of crumpled it up a bit to make it look old – kids loved it!! I also printed some onto regular white paper for them to color. This is how it turned out: Like I said, kids loved it!! Here are the CLUES I made to go with it: – Go to the place where mom and dad lay down, there some gold pieces can be found. – Go out back and find the largest tree, how many pieces will you find? ONE, TWO, THREE! – There’s a place you go to play with toys, it’s also the place to find gold to enjoy. – Go to the place you sit down to eat, there two pieces of gold will you meet. – The place you put your dirty clothes at, is also the place where gold fell flat. – Go to the place you look for things to eat, there you may find one or two gold treats. – Where’s the place that you wash your body and hair? Perhaps you will find more gold pieces there. – Go to the front door of your house right away, to find more gold in this hunt. – This the last place you need to go, it’s the place we head to when picking out a show. If you would like these clues as a PDF, go. You can obviously edit the clues however you want, but these worked for us so that my 6, 4 and 3 year olds figured it out. I printed the PDF onto Cardstock and cut them into strips and put them in their correct spots. The kids were ecstatic to find their favorite treats at the end in their little treasure box. More than anything it was super fun to watch the kids work together to figure out their clues and collect their “gold pieces.” Now, when anyone comes over they always show them their “real-life gold nuggets!!” Makes me smile. ? Can’t wait to do this again with the kids! For more great Kids Activities to enjoy with the kids this summer, be sure to check out: For all Kids Crafts on the blog go. For all FREE prints go. Am I able to migrate the content that uses these templates with Content Matrix Console - SharePoint Edition? Answer Unfortunately SharePoint Edition does not support the Fabulous 40 Templates that were released by Microsoft. These templates contain a number of customizations, and these customizations cause some problems for the SharePoint Edition when we try to migrate and map content. Content Matrix Console - SharePoint Edition is able to migrate some of the content, however, because of some of the customizations that have been made to the template, we can run into problems that prevent us from migrating other parts of the content correctly, or prevent us from migrating the pages at all. While not able to migrate using the Fabulous 40 Templates, it is possible to create Site Collections using the.WSP based templates, from the Fabulous 40, as long as these templates are deployed on the server before hand. It is not possible for SharePoint Edition to create any Site Collections using the.STP templates, since it is not possible to create Site Collections using these templates through the Web UI. SharePoint 2010 does not support the Fabulous 40 Templates. Many of you have used the 'Fabulous 40 templates' that were created for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Some of these templates were created as site admin templates (.stp files) and some as server admin templates (.wsp files). Microsoft is not releasing new versions of these templates for SharePoint 2010 Products. Jul 02, 2010 Fab 40 templates were free templates released by Microsoft for sharepoint 2007 and wss 3.0 to address some of the common scenarios encountered. Thank your for the response.however, Im still a little confused. I used the employeetraining template to create a site in SharePoint 2010 dev enviroment, I would. Also,.stp files are deprecated and can't be used to create new sites when you upgrade to SharePoint Server 2010 or SharePoint Foundation 2010. So, what do you do when you want to upgrade? Sites based on these templates should upgrade, but you'll want to try out your upgrade in a test environment before you upgrade your production environment so that you can catch any potential issues. Definitely use the pre-upgrade checker to identify any issues (some people have seen problems with custom workflows or CAML-based views in the templates). However, after upgrade, you won't be able to use STP files to create new templates. Type of template Can I upgrade sites based on this template? Will I be able to use the template after upgrade? Site admin (.stp file or site template) Yes No Server admin (.wsp file or solution package) Yes* Yes* *There are issues with a few of the.wsp files after upgrade. In particular, after upgrading, some customers are unable to create new sites based on the following templates: Absence Request and Vacation Schedule Management, Call Center, Help Desk, IT Team Workspace, Knowledge Base, and Physical Asset Tracking and Management. If you have trouble using any of these templates, you can post an issue in the SharePoint 2010 – Setup, Upgrade, Administration and Operation TechNet Forum at, or contact Microsoft Product Support. So, what do you do if you're using an.stp file and you want to continue using it after upgrade? You can convert the.stp file to a.wsp file manually. To do this, in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Office SharePoint Server 2007, create a site based on the template, and then upgrade the site to 2010. Then, follow this procedure: • On the Site Actions menu in the site, click Site Settings. • On the Site Settings page, under Site Actions, click Save site as Template. • On the Save as Template page, enter a file name and Template name and then click OK. • The site template is saved as a WSP file to the Solutions Gallery for that site collection and you can create new sites based on that solution. If you can't or don't want to do that, you can look to the partner community for upgraded templates. Khalil over on TechSolutions has already converted some of these templates to 2010 for you. I have the same problem of the other people. I got a WSP from techsolution website. I dont see the HelpDesk when create a new site, after following this steps: 1. Create a new Web Application on SPFoundation 2010 2. Create a new Site Collection against that new Web Application (Select template 'Team Site' while creating this Site Collection) 3. Goto 'Site Settings' of that new Web Application 4. Goto 'Solutions' 5. Upload the SPFoundation 2010 Application Template '.wsp' file, and 'Activate' that when upload completes 6. Create a new 'Site' in the newly created 'Site Collection' (in step 2), and select the newly uploaded solution in 'Template' section ================================== But in the last step, (the solution in 'Template'), don´t appear nothing. Anyone have an answer? I second Craig's comment about this being a disappointment. I opened an incident with Microsoft back in June about the KnowledgeBase template not functioning properly after the upgrade to 2010. I was told that a new set of FAB 40 templates for 2010 was under development and would be released soon which 'should be able to resolve these issues.' I’ve been back in touch with Microsoft regarding the incident that was archived (to be officially closed upon notification from Microsoft of new template release) and they were unaware that “Microsoft is not releasing new versions of these templates for SharePoint 2010 Products.” The Microsoft support technician I spoke with today says they will do more research & follow up with me. I’m beginning to think that there will be no “upgrade” for our heavily utilized WSS 3.0 KnowlegeBase; and that I’ll have to go the route of using as a means for continuing use of all the content we’ve generated over the past several years. This is unfortunate. We have two sites that heavily use the Knowledge Base template from the 2007 Fab 40. We tested before upgrading from 2007 to 2010 and identified numerous issues with the KB after the upgrade (can't write or upload articles, problems viewing articles, can't edit articles, and if a user clicks the 'revert to template' button, then the article is wiped out. It isn't going to be an easy task to get this info out of these two KBs because the template is a customized wiki. The TechSolutions KB won't work for anyone with an existing 2007–> 2010 Knowledge Base because Tech Solutions has rewritten the code totally for their version of the Knowledge Base–it's got nothing in common with the Fab 40 template. We've upgraded from 2007 to 2010, but this has been a huge stumbling block for us. Wow, I'm an end-user and I really needed the Competitive Intelligence SharePoint Services 2.0 template and my company is in 3.0, so we can't even look at it. The Competitive Analysis 3. Template is not the same. Can anyone help me to find a way to at least see how the CI 2.0 template was created (screen shots of each page) so our team can attempt to recreate the site in 3.0 and eventually 2010 (since we also plan to upgrade)? Like Craig Tolley said, small businesses just don't have the time or sometimes staff to develop such pages (that really are rich to use for certain buisness functions. I really would appreciate anyone's help on this one! Thank you for taking this back to the product team Samantha. I'm going around the net linking others with issues, thoughts, concerns, etc. Back to this blog. I'm not certain the product team fully understands the impact the fab 40 templates not functioning in 2010 will have for folks who wish to migrate their 2003 / 2007 sites to 2010. Although Khalil is doing some excellent work, it is a workaround – which unfortunately results in an unsupported installation. I look forward to hearing what the product team has to say – optimistically ?. I have one client where the content db triples in size if the fab40 are deplloyed during the upgrade to SP2010. Remove the Fab40 and and your upgraded content dbs not grow to that extent Also, Mike is correct Microsoft will not be releasing a 2010 version of the Fab40 and if I remember correctly, the Fab40 were not supported but were to be used as demos SP2010 has so many abilities that you can easily replicate the behaviour of any of the Fab40 templates. There were and still are numerous issues with the Fab40 and I always recommended against there deployment to production. That said for all the small business out there Tech Solution has they claim I have noit used them re-created the fab40 fior SP2010, good luck if they as flaky as the originals you may need it Have fun, SharePoint ROCKs!!! I have installed the FAB40 templates in a SharePoint 2007 Environment. I am now tasked with upgrading to SharePoint 2010. I am utilizing the 'Database Attach' upgrade path and all site collections using the FAB 40 templates are failing on upgrade. Sites whihc use the FAB40 templates have no content once upgraded. Is there any way possible to upgrade these sites using the DB attach method? Is there anything I can do besides recreating the sites with a standard template and migrating existing content into the new site collection? I have followed the url mentioned for fab 40 template for sharepoint 2010 but I am facing lot of problem with activation of knowledge base and call center template as the template knowledge base template the look and feel comes out but unable to open any new documentary library of Knowledge base like recent article, recent change etc the moment I click on add new page its shows as this error “List does not exist. The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user.” With respect to call center template concerned I have activated the wsp but unable to create the site based from that template and gives error as “site template required that the feature 2acf27a5-f703-4277-9f5d-24d70110b18b be installed in the farm or site collection” Could you please let me know as I am missing something. This product is installed on the customer's. It receives less frequent updates, but has access to a wider set of features and customization capabilities. There are three editions of SharePoint Server: Standard, Enterprise, and Foundation (free) which was discontinued in 2016. These servers may be provisioned as normal virtual/cloud servers, or as hosted services. SharePoint Standard [ ] Microsoft SharePoint Standard builds on the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation in a few key product areas. • Sites: Audience targeting, governance tools, Secure store service, functionality. • Communities: 'MySites' (personal profiles including skills management, and search tools), enterprise wikis, organization hierarchy browser, tags and notes. • Content: Improved tooling and compliance for document & record management, managed metadata, word automation services, content type management. • Search: Better search results, search customization abilities, mobile search, 'Did you mean?' , OS search integration, Faceted Search, and metadata/relevancy/date/location-based refinement options. • Composites: Pre-built workflow templates, BCS profile pages. SharePoint Standard licensing includes a CAL (client access license) component and a server fee. SharePoint Standard may also be licensed through a cloud model. SharePoint Enterprise [ ] Built upon SharePoint Standard, Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise features can be unlocked simply by providing an additional license key. Extra features in SharePoint Enterprise include: • Search thumbnails and previews, rich web indexing, better search results. • integration, dashboards, and business data surfacing. • Microsoft Office Access, Visio, Excel, and InfoPath Forms services. • SharePoint Enterprise Search extensions. SharePoint Enterprise licensing includes a CAL component and a server fee that must be purchased in addition to SharePoint Server licensing. SharePoint Enterprise may also be licensed through a cloud model. SharePoint Online [ ] Microsoft's hosted SharePoint is typically bundled in subscriptions, but can be purchased outright. It is limited to a core set of collaboration, file hosting, and document and content management scenarios, and is updated on a frequent basis, but is typically comparable with SharePoint Enterprise. Main articles: and SharePoint allows for storage, retrieval, searching, archiving, tracking, management, and reporting on of electronic documents and records. Many of the functions in this product are designed around various legal, information management, and process requirements in organizations. SharePoint also provides search and 'graph' functionality. SharePoint's integration with and allow for, and encrypted/ synchronization. This capability is often used to replace an existing corporate, and is typically coupled with an policy. Intranet and social network [ ]. Main articles: and A SharePoint or is a way to centralize access to enterprise information and applications. It is a tool that helps an organization manage its internal communications, applications and more easily. Microsoft claims that this has organizational benefits such as increased, centralizing, reducing new staff on-boarding costs, and providing the means to capture and share (e.g. Via tools such as wikis). Collaborative software [ ] SharePoint contains team collaboration capabilities, including: (integrated with and ), social collaboration, shared mailboxes, and project related document storage and collaboration. Groupware in SharePoint is based around the concept of a 'Team Site'. File hosting service (Personal Cloud) [ ]. Main articles: and SharePoint Server hosts, which allows storage and synchronization of an individual's personal documents, as well as public/private file sharing of those documents. This is typically combined with other Microsoft Office Servers/Services such as, to produce a 'personal cloud', This capability is often compared to services like. Can be used to access files without using the web interface. However, Microsoft's implementation of WebDAV doesn't conform to the official WebDAV protocol and therefore isn't compliant to the WebDAV standard. For example, WebDAV applications have to support the language tagging functionality of the XML specification which Microsoft's implementation doesn't. Only Windows XP to Windows 8 are supported. Custom web applications [ ]. Main article: SharePoint's custom development capabilities provide an additional layer of services that allow rapid prototyping of integrated (typically line-of-business) web applications. SharePoint provides developers with integration into corporate directories and data sources through standards such as REST/OData/OAuth. Enterprise application developers use SharePoint's security and information management capabilities across a variety of development platforms and scenarios. SharePoint also contains an enterprise 'app store' that has different types of external applications with encapsulated and managed to access to resources such as corporate user data and document data. Content structure [ ] Pages [ ] SharePoint provides free-form pages which may be edited in-browser. These may be used to provide content to users, or to provide structure to the SharePoint environment. Web Parts & App Parts [ ] Web parts and App parts are components (also known as ) that can be inserted into Pages. They are used to display information from both SharePoint and third party applications. Lists, libraries, content, and 'Apps' [ ] A SharePoint library stores and displays files and folders. A SharePoint list stores and displays data items. Each item in a library or list is a content item. Examples of content items include 'Document' - which may have a 'Name', 'Contact' - with contact information fields, or 'Sales Invoice' - with fields such as 'Total' and 'Customer ID'. Content Types are definitions (or types) of items. These definitions describe things like what fields a Document, Contact, or Invoice may have. SharePoint allows you to create your own definitions based on the built-in ones. Some built in content types include: Contacts, Appointments, Documents, and Folders. Some built-in content types such as 'contact' or 'appointment' allow the list to expose advanced features such as or synchronization. In SharePoint 2013, in some locations, Lists and Libraries were renamed 'Apps' (despite being unrelated to the 'SharePoint App Store'). In SharePoint 2016, some of these were renamed back to Lists and Libraries. Sites [ ] A SharePoint Site is a collection of pages, lists, libraries, apps, configurations, features, content types, and sub-sites. Examples of Site templates in SharePoint include: collaboration (team) sites, wiki sites, blank sites, and publishing sites. Configuration and customization [ ] Web-based configuration [ ] SharePoint is primarily configured through a web browser. The web-based user interface provides most of the configuration capability of the product. Depending on your permission level, the web interface can be used to: • Manipulate content structure, site structure, create/delete sites, modify navigation and security, or add/remove apps. • Enable or disable product features, upload custom designs/themes, or turn on integrations with other Office products. • Configure basic workflows, view usage analytics, manage metadata, configure search options, upload customizations, and set up integration. SharePoint Designer [ ]. Main article: SharePoint Designer is a semi-deprecated product that provided 'advanced editing' capabilities for HTML/ASPX pages, but remains the primary method of editing SharePoint workflows. A significant subset of HTML editing features were removed in Designer 2013, and the product is expected to be deprecated in 2016-7. Microsoft SharePoint's Server Features are configured either using, or a Web UI called 'Central Administration'. Configuration of server farm settings (e.g. Search crawl, web application services) can be handled through these central tools. While Central Administration is limited to farm-wide settings (config DB), it provides access to tools such as the 'SharePoint Health Analyzer', a diagnostic health-checking tool. In addition to PowerShell's farm configuration features, some limited tools are made available for administering or adjusting settings for sites or site collections in content databases. A limited subset of these features are available by SharePoint's providers, including Microsoft. Custom development [ ] • The SharePoint Framework (SPFX) provides a development model based on typescript language. The technical stack is yeoman, node.js, webstack, gulp, npm. It embraces modern web technologies developmemt method. It is the only supported way to customize the new modern experience user interface (UI). It is globaly available since mid 2017. It allows web developer to step in Sharepoint development more easily. • The SharePoint 'App Model' provides various types of external applications that offer the capability to show authenticated web-based applications through a variety of UI mechanisms. Apps may be either 'SharePoint-hosted', or 'Provider-hosted'. Provider hosted apps may be developed using most back-end web technologies (e.g. Apps are served through a proxy in SharePoint, which requires some DNS/certificate manipulation in on-premises versions of SharePoint. • The SharePoint 'Client Object Model' (available for and ), and / can be referenced from many environments, providing authenticated users access to a wide variety of SharePoint capabilities. • 'Sand-boxed' plugins can be uploaded by any end-user who has been granted permission. These are security-restricted, and can be governed at multiple levels (including resource consumption management). In multi-tenant cloud environments, these are the only customization's that are typically allowed. • Farm features are typically fully trusted code that need to be installed at a -level. These are considered deprecated for new development. • Service applications: It is possible to integrate directly into the SharePoint bus, at a farm level. Customization may appear through: • Application-to-application integration with SharePoint. • Extensions to SharePoint functionality (e.g. Custom workflow actions). • 'Web Parts' (also known as 'portlets', 'widgets', or 'gadgets') that provide new functionality when added to a page. • Pages/sites or page/site templates. Server architecture [ ] SharePoint Server can be scaled down to operate entirely from one developer machine, or scaled up to be managed across hundreds of machines. Farms [ ] A SharePoint farm is a logical grouping of SharePoint servers that share common resources. A farm typically operates stand-alone, but can also subscribe to functions from another farm, or provide functions to another farm. Each farm has its own central configuration database, which is managed through either a interface, or a Central Administration website (which relies partly on PowerShell's infrastructure). Each server in the farm is able to directly interface with the central configuration database. Servers use this to configure services (e.g., windows features, database connections) to match the requirements of the farm, and to report server health issues, resource allocation issues, etc. Web applications [ ] Web applications (WAs) are top-level containers for content in a SharePoint farm. A web application is associated primarily with configuration. A web application consists of a set of access mappings or URLs defined in the SharePoint central management console, which are replicated by SharePoint across every IIS Instance (e.g. Web Application Servers) configured in the farm. Site collections [ ] A site collection is a hierarchical group of 'SharePoint Sites'. Each web application must have at least one site collection. Site collections share common properties (), common subscriptions to service applications, and can be configured with unique host names. A site collection may have a distinct content databases, or may share a content database with other site collections in the same web application. Service applications [ ] Service applications provide granular pieces of SharePoint functionality to other web and service applications in the farm. Examples of service applications include the User Profile Sync service, and the Search Indexing service. A service application can be turned off, exist on one server, or be load-balanced across many servers in a farm. Service Applications are designed to have independent functionality and independent security scopes. Administration, security, compliance [ ] SharePoint's architecture enables 'least-privileges' execution permission model. SharePoint Central Administration (the CA) is a web application that typically exists on a single server in the farm, however it is also able to be deployed for redundancy to multiple servers. This application provides a complete centralized management interface for web & service applications in the SharePoint farm, including AD account management for web & service applications. In the event of the failure of the CA, is typically used on the CA server to reconfigure the farm. The structure of the SharePoint platform enables multiple WAs to exist on a single farm. In a shared () hosting environment, owners of these WAs may require their own management console. The SharePoint 'Tenant Administration' (TA) is an optional web application used by web application owners to manage how their web application interacts with the shared resources in the farm. Compliance, standards and integration [ ] • SharePoint integrates with. • SharePoint uses Microsoft's document standard for integration with Microsoft Office. Document metadata is also stored using this format. • SharePoint provides various (APIs: client-side, server-side, JavaScript) and, and -based interfaces. • SharePoint can be used to achieve compliance with many document retention, record management, document ID and discovery laws. • SharePoint is compatible with - the Content Management Interoperability Standard, using Microsoft's. • SharePoint by default produces valid 1.0 that is compliant with accessibility standards. • SharePoint can use claims-based authentication, relying on tokens for security assertions. SharePoint provides an open authentication plugin model. • SharePoint has support for to support the localization of content in SharePoint. Also added support for AppFabric. 'Office Server' evolved out of the and Office Server Extensions and 'Team Pages'. It targeted simple, bottom-up collaboration. 'Tahoe', built on shared technology with Exchange and the “Digital Dashboard”, targeted top-down portals, search and document management. The searching and indexing capabilities of SharePoint came from the 'Tahoe' feature set. The search and indexing features were a combination of the index and crawling features from the Microsoft Site Server family of products and from the query language of Microsoft Index Server. GAC-(Global Assembly Cache) is used to accommodate the shared assemblies that are specifically designated to be shared by applications executed on a system. Microsoft Corporation. January 29, 2013.
